Having existed on and off as both a club and varsity sport since 1912, the modern era of Notre Dame hockey kicked off in 1968 when they began play as a Division I independent team. They soon joined the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), and were members from 1971-1981. This design was recreated from a Notre Dame hockey puck, celebrating the era when the Fighting Irish were led by coach Lefty Smith.
